Coin50: Crypto’s Answer to S&P 500
Coinbase, the largest U.S. crypto exchange, has launched the Coinbase 50 Index, or Coin50, to provide a comprehensive view of the crypto market's performance. Designed as a crypto counterpart to the S&P 500, the Coin50 measures the top 50 cryptocurrencies by market cap, aiming to replace Bitcoin as the default market benchmark.
Greg Tusar, Coinbase’s Head of Institutional Products, explained that Bitcoin’s dominance as a benchmark stems from the lack of alternatives, but its relevance will likely decline as the crypto market diversifies. The Coin50 includes Bitcoin (50%), Ethereum (28%), Solana (6%), and XRP (3%), among others, and will rebalance quarterly based on market changes.
Available globally (except in the U.S.), the index serves both as an analytical tool and an investment product via perpetual futures. However, its primary goal is aiding market trend identification and price discovery.
Coinbase aims to position the Coin50 as a reliable metric reflecting the crypto economy's growing size and diversity, setting a foundation for the future of crypto investing.

POLYMARKET
Polymarket Founder Faces FBI
On election night, Shayne Coplan, the 26-year-old founder of Polymarket, was at the peak of his success. Just over a week later, his New York apartment was raided by the FBI, putting his future in jeopardy. Polymarket, an online prediction market, gained prominence during the presidential campaign by delivering forecasts more accurate than most traditional polls. Coplan had even received congratulations from key figures in Trump’s orbit, highlighting Polymarket’s role in election discussions.
However, the FBI's raid raised questions about Polymarket’s compliance with U.S. regulations. The platform is under a federal consent decree restricting U.S. citizens from certain prediction markets. Critics have also flagged potential issues like wash trading, although no evidence suggests market manipulation influenced the election.
Polymarket's innovative use of blockchain and USDC for wagers has attracted high-profile investors, including Vitalik Buterin and Peter Thiel's Founder’s Fund. Despite its success, the startup faces challenges, including sustaining activity outside major political events and competition from platforms like Robinhood.
As the FBI investigation unfolds, Coplan has defiantly dismissed the raid as politically motivated. How Polymarket navigates this scrutiny may determine its future as a key player in prediction markets—or open the door for competitors to seize its place in the crypto-driven economy.

Coinbase, Robinhood CEOs Eye Clarity
Coinbase and Robinhood CEOs expressed optimism about the Trump administration’s potential impact on crypto regulation, suggesting it could resolve long-standing uncertainties. Speaking to CNBC, Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev highlighted the market rally dubbed the "Trump Pump," with Bitcoin nearing $90,000, reflecting optimism about pro-crypto policies. Tenev noted that Trump’s campaign embraced crypto innovation, aiming to position the U.S. as a global leader in the sector.
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for regulatory clarity. Armstrong criticized the SEC under Gary Gensler, noting its combative approach toward the industry, including legal actions against Coinbase. “We finally have a chance to address major unresolved issues,” Armstrong said.
Trump's appearance at the Bitcoin Conference earlier this year and his administration’s pro-crypto stance have bolstered market confidence. Both CEOs see this as an opportunity for the U.S. to adopt forward-looking policies, fueling growth in the crypto industry.

HEALTH
RFK Jr. to Lead Health Policy
President-elect Donald Trump has announced his intent to nominate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a longtime vaccine skeptic, to lead the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). This controversial choice places Kennedy, a lawyer and anti-vaccine activist, in charge of a vast agency responsible for overseeing public health initiatives, medical research, and programs like Medicare and Medicaid.
Trump defended the decision on Truth Social, stating, “For too long, Americans have been misled by the industrial food complex and drug companies. RFK Jr. will ‘Make America Great and Healthy Again.’” Kennedy, a former Democrat who ran as an independent in the 2024 presidential race, endorsed Trump after securing a role in health policy under the new administration.
Kennedy’s history of promoting vaccine misinformation and opposing fluoride in drinking water has raised doubts about his confirmation, even in a Republican-controlled Senate. Critics worry about his ability to manage HHS’s critical responsibilities, which include the CDC, FDA, and NIH.
